Un sistema de escritura puede ser completo o incompleto; es completo el que puede expresar sin ambigüedad todo lo que puede manifestar y decir una lengua determinada. Las primeras técnicas de escritura se remontan al 4000 a. C.
La invención de la escritura corresponde a un pasaje de la prehistoria en una transición de miles de años.
